THE INDIAN SOUP

Raasem is a heart-warming soup made out of tomato, tamarind juice and various spices. Raasem was created in South Indian but now it is available around the world. You can even have it in the comfort of your homes. Try asking any Indians of why Raasem is the best thing ever and i bet you, they will run out of words to explain. The taste of Raasem is unique. It is slightly sourish and slightly spicy. With the two flavors combined, it leaves your taste buds craving for more. Below is the recipe to make Raasem.

 

Recipe:

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4  

 

You will need: 

-Dry chilly (2-3)

- Shallots (chopped)

-Ginger (chopped)

-Garlic (3 cloves)

-Curry leaves (4-5 leaves)

- Tomato (1)

-Turmeric powder (1/4 tbsp)

- Tamarind paste (1 tbsp)

-Oil (1 tbsp)

-Salt 

-Black pepper powder (2 tbsp)

-Fenugreek seeds (1/2 tbsp)

-Cumin (1 tbsp)

-Mustard seeds (1 tbsp)

-Coriander

-Water (500 ml)

 

Preparation:

 

1. Pound the shallots and garlic. In a pot/pan, heat up some oil to sauté the pounded ingredients until fragrant. Add mustard seeds and continue stirring until they begin to pop. Then, add dried chilies and curry leaves. Sauté for another 30 seconds.

2. Add turmeric, cumin powder, fenugreek seeds and black pepper. Continue sautéing over low heat. Once the ingredients are fragrant, add chopped or pounded tomato.

3. Mix the tamarind paste with some water and pour it into the pot. Make sure you remove the tamarind seed. Add in plain water. Increase heat and bring to boil. Once it boils, let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until tomatoes have softened. Add salt to taste. Garnish with coriander before serving. 

And there you have it, a nice, heart-warming Indian soup. You can drink it just like that or have it with white rice. But why, of all soup, Raasem is the best? It is because it possesses certain health benefits.
