Feeling sad, down and lost interest on yourself and the
things around you…that my friend is DEPRESSION.
Depression is a mood disorder. It’s least noticeable
outwardly but if not dealt with, it may lead to health and mental issue.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 800,000 people die due
to suicide every year with one person every 40 seconds. It is also the second
leading cause of death among the age group of 15-29 years old. With depression,
in 2012, an estimation of 804 000 suicides occurred worldwide. It’s a huge
figure back then and imagine its rate now.
Here are 5 signs that show someone is suffering from
depression.
1) 1) Waking up daily with an empty feel
People with depression literally have no
idea what they want. They tend to have some sort of empty feeling in them, a
feeling that is hard to share and explain. It is like there’s a whole in them.
Feeling empty inside, they are unable to think or recognize what they actually
want. They also have no interest in everything and everyone, even the things
they love the most. They feel as if everything has come to an end.
2) 2) Over thinking
A person with depression often over thinks.
It can be in any situation. The minute they face a situation they over think
instead of finding a way to solve it. When they over think, they are actually
putting pressure on themselves. They fill their heads with unnecessary things
and end up getting stressed. In a long run, that stress eventually leads to
depression if left unattended.
3) 3) Isolation
A depressed person likes to be alone. They
avoid the fellowship of their friends and family. They like to isolate
themselves thinking it’s the best of them. By doing so, they lack
communication. Basically everyone needs to communicate. Without communication,
there is no meaning in life. All a depressed wants is to be alone and away from
people.
4) 4) Low self esteem
Another trait of a depressed person is that
they like to degrade themselves. They have this thinking that they are not good,
they are the worst and everyone else is always better than them. They fail to
see their ability. They also have this guilt feeling in them. The more they put
themselves down, the more they slip into depression.
5) 5) Uncontrollable emotions
When someone is depressed, they cannot
think or act properly. As a consequence, they react different. They are unable
to control their emotions. They have uncontrollable anger where they might
burst in rage. Some even hurt themselves or even those around them. It is not
because they want to but because they are unaware of their condition. Some get
irritated by people around them or with the environment they are in.
6) 6) Notable habits
Some depressed people show physical symptoms.
Some have dizziness or headache. Some are unable to think straight and
rationally. Some show hesitation in speech and body movements. Some display low
energy. Some have a change in appetite where they might have abnormal eating
patterns and weight loss or gain. Some indulge themselves with sad or death
stuff like playing with knifes or listening to sad songs. Some have excessive
guilt feeling and worthlessness talks. The worst is those who have thoughts,
plans and even attempts of suicide.
The symptoms of depression can vary from one person and
another person. This disorder can affect adults, adolescents, elderly and even
children. The sad news is that many of those who are facing depression turn to
suicide because they are unable to get help.
Every problem has a solution. Suicide or harming yourself is
not the last option. There are other ways you can help yourself or someone who
is going through depression. You may seek help from professional counselor or
therapist. You can talk things out with your parents. You can even share it
with you closest and trusted friend if that makes you comfortable. And if you
happen to see others struggling, don’t hesitate to give a hand. Remember,
physical wound is visible but emotional wounds in invisible.
