Regarding my post earlier, I happen to come across few comments on Instagram. The news was posted on World of Buzz Official Instagram page. I read through the comments and I think it’s something we could debate on. SHOULD DRUNK DRIVERS BE GIVEN DEATH PENALTY IF THEY COST LIVES?
In
my opinion, if you're going to apply 'an eye for an eye' concept in all
situations, I bet it will only cause more harm.
Taking
another life doesn’t really resolve the issue. In fact, it will only create
more hatred and anger and it is also an inhuman act. Making another person
grief does not bring satisfaction. I’m not saying the suspect is innocent but
taking his life is not going to bring about any good. If the death penalty is
implemented, the fear will be there but will it permanently stop the wrong from
happening again? To solve a problem, I think we should head straight to its
root.
Why
people get drunk? It’s because of alcohol supply in our country isn’t it? We can’t
stop people from consuming them but we can set a certain limits. For instance,
monitor bars and club’s business hours. You can also limit the consumption of
alcohol. Like drinking at home, in your personal space is at your own risk but
drinking in public must be monitored because you’re surrounded by others. If someone
attempts to leave the bar in a drunken state, hold that person till they regain
conscious or call the police or maybe call someone they know. But if you limit
the alcohol consumption in public then you need not worry about going to this
extend.
Also,
control the import of alcohol if necessary. Withdrawal of license is applicable
and so is lifetime imprisonment. Remember, prevention is the first step in
avoiding a mishap.
If
a person is sentenced to death, you’re actually relieving him from being
accountable. What can a dead person do? If he is kept alive, he might have to
serve years in prison, he will have to look after the victim’s family. All this
will disrupt his normal way of living and will make him to think over and over
again. Apart from that, why punish the innocent because of one person’s
mistake? I’m sure the suspect has a family of his own. Why put them in hard
times when they didn’t do anything wrong?
Besides,
we human have no rights in deciding the life and death of a person. We’re not
God. I’m pretty sure this applies to all religion out there. Bear in mind that for
every bad deed we do, we will definitely face the consequences. It might happen
instantly or it may take some time but no one escapes it. It is just a matter
of time.
We
should also understand that the man didn’t do this on purpose or willingly. He was
under the impression of alcohol and was not in a right state of mind. Unlike cases
like rape, that is a voluntary act but they still get away with it and live as
if nothing happened (just rape and rape+ murder are two different cases).
Just
because we’re angry, it doesn’t mean we have to be so judgmental. It is easy
for us to pass down judgments on someone but if we were to face the same
situation we would most likely disagree. Let’s say you are related to the drunk
driver. He might be your friend, cousin, sibling, relative or even your father.
Would you still want the death penalty to be implemented?
In
a nutshell, I’m saying that death penalty is not really a solution as it will
only cause more conflict. Instead, fixing the problem through its roots might
help to bring a change in a long run. Such events can be prevented if we take
precaution measures and soon I believe we can curb this issue.
These
are my point of view. I have no intention in offending anyone. It’s just that
my opinion might be different from yours. Plus, it’s a debatable topic that
will make us think and wonder. Have a good day.
