The government of India has banned 59 Chinese mobile applications including the most popular apps which is Tik Tok and Wechat, to counter the threat posed by these applications to the country’s “sovereignty and security,” it said in a press release late on Monday.
The administration said the applications are occupied with activities "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, protection of India, the security of the state and public order." The boycott has been forced under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with significant arrangements of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009.
A top official said the govt had thought about all possibilities before making the choice. "These applications have been there for quite a while, and there are some protection and security issues with them including dangers of information leaving the nation," said the individual.
The announcement from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) said had protests from different sources, including a few reports about the abuse of some portable applications for taking and secretly transmitting clients' information in an unapproved way to servers outside India.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has sent an “exhaustive recommendation for blocking the malicious apps,” the press release said.
The Internet Freedom Foundation said, “This is not a legal order issued under Section 69A. Our first task is transparency and disclosure.” The activist group tweeted such cases needed to be considered individually and not in the aggregate.
There are pros and cons in this issue because other than misusing the social media platform, there are many people who really making use of social media applications such as Tik Tok. There are quite a lot of comedians, content makers who develop their passion in this platform reaching millions of views and followers. It is saddening that these platforms might be the only hope for them to express their talents. I hope that they can manage and continue their journey in different ways. However, is this a real boycott to China government or is India really concerned with the security?
