Christmas is the season of giving. And the best part is that anyone and everyone can celebrate it. Christmas is celebrated in regards to the birth of Christ centuries ago. On Christmas, you can see colorful lights, decorations hanging around, Christmas trees, presents and food. I’m going to share how Christmas is celebrated in my family.
Every year on the Christmas Eve, we would dress in our best attire and head to church for a Christmas Eve service. We have dance performances, sketches, caroling, a short sermon and refreshments. We even give gifts and hampers to those in need. Children get goodie bags. The vibe is just another level. Christmas songs, everyone wishing and hugging each other and the sound of laughter filling the space. It is just beautiful.
On the 25th of December, on Christmas day itself, I
usually travel overseas with my family. Our vacation usually lasts for a week
or so (till New Year). So far we went to Phuket, Kerala and Indonesia. Sometimes
we just take a vacation in Malaysia itself. One of the best Christmas I had was
in Phuket. What caught my attention there is the blue sea. I don’t easily swim
when I visit beaches. But when I went to Phuket and joined the island hopping
activity, I was deeply in love with the sea. It was clean, crystal clear and it
was BLUE!!!! I felt so relaxed and refreshed. The sand was so soft and the view
was just splendid. I would definitely love to go there again. Besides that, the
food there was also great. They even have Indian and Asian cuisine. So food was
not even a problem.
It is not a must to travel during Christmas and most people think that on Christmas day you should have open house, have a feast and invite guests but that is not necessary at all. You can do so many things on Christmas. Once my church members and I visited a children’s orphanage at Seremban on Christmas. We played games, sang song, cooked lunch for them, gave them gifts and did some touch up for the home. And not just that, on our way home to KL, we stopped by the public beach and gave away sweet packets to those who were there. It felt different. That was my first time doing a social service. What I learned was that not everyone is as privileged as we think and we ought to be thankful for what we have. I felt happy that I got to spend my Christmas with this kids. I was happy that our visit brought them joy. We might not be doing it as often but at least on that day those kids felt that they were not forgetting during this special season. As I said Christmas is always about giving rather than giving. It doesn’t have to be something fancy or expensive. It can be something simple as long it comes from the heart.
The unique things about Christmas is that it is celebrated worldwide and by all sorts of people. If you haven't experienced Christmas before, then you should. So that’s how I celebrated Christmas every year. How about you?
