Earlier this month, on the 19th of June
2020, P. Jayaraj, 59, and his son Fenix, 31, residents in the southern Indian
state of Tamil Nadu (Thoothukudi/Tuticorin) were captured by the police
department in Santhankulam for violating lockdown rules. The police said that
both the father and son had kept their mobile shop open despite the lockdown
rules.
The duos were tortured, raped and were brutally
murdered by the police while they were held captive. They were also taken to
areas where there were no CCTV coverage and were beaten and sodomized with iron
tipped lathi (baton).
On the 22nd June 2020, Fenix died due to
injuries and his dad died the following day. Below are the details on what
actually happened.
Following this issue, many activists, celebrities
and corporate heads have come down on the state police and Sathankulam
magistrate B.Saravanan for the brutal torture. The inspector, two sub-inspector
and two constables who were involved in this case were demanded to be booked
for murder and to be arrested. This
issue is then compared with the incident of George Floyd who was killed by US
police in Minneapolis.
Another case that proves humans are just animals in
disguise. Rules are there to bring control. But the only thing out of control
is the inhuman act of those in power. Even if you are a police or someone with
power, who gave you the rights to rob someone else’s’ life? I am sure when you’re
appointed with this job; your vow was to protect the country and the people at
all cost. What happened to that promise? Instead of serving the people, you end
up killing them. Where is the justice for all this? This is not the first time
India is facing this issue. There are tones of cases that are not looked into,
thousands of justice is not served. When will there be an end to it?
And here’s a funny thing. In India, everyone is of
the same race, they pray to the same gods, they hold onto the same beliefs but
they think and behave as if they are some multi-racial country. Why is that so?
You can’t afford to help your own brethren but when something else happens
around the world, you are so keen in that. I really hope the people of Indian
gets some sense. Being of the same kind you are supposed to be a united
country, not divided. An account on tweeter tweeted that 'not even half the Indians who spoke out on George Floyd is speaking out on Jeyaraj and Fenix . It just shows indian hyprocrisy (https://twitter.com/hey_its_sanesha/status/1276857374943268864/photo/1). You can find other tweets regarding this issue on Twitter.
I also do hope that such policemen would never be
recruited into the police force ever again. Not just being suspended or fined
but fully removed from the police force because they don’t have what it takes
to become one. It only brings shame to the entire department.
I pray that not just issue but every other hidden issue
will come to an end and victims will get the justice they deserve.
