Haldi is the most important wedding ritual among Hindus in India and also other parts of the world. This occasion is a mixture of fun and tradition. Haldi is marked as an intimate gathering with loved ones. During the function, there will be dance, songs, decorations and refreshments. The best part yellow is the most used colour in this occasion. 

Let's talk about the ceremony.


The Haldi ceremony takes place in the morning of the wedding day or 1-2 days before the wedding. It depends on the community as they have different rules and customs. So, Haldi is applied on the face, shoulder, neck, knees and feet. Basically, you have yellow stuff applied all over you from head to toe. Haldi is applied by married women, friends and family on the bride and groom. It is said that if the yellow substance is applied by unmarried siblings or friends, it can lead them to getting married soon. Haldi is first applied on the groom and then followed by the bride. After applying, the bride and groom are not allowed to leave the house. Some host the ceremony for the bride and groom on the same day and same place and some host it at different place and day.

Moving on to the outfit. During the Haldi ceremony, most people wear yellow or white. Men wear dhoti,kurit or just a plain singlet while women wear punjabi suit, lengha or saree.

Now let's look at how Haldi is made. The main ingredient to making Haldi is turmeric and that's wear your get the yellow colour. Here's the manual way to prepare Haldi. You'll need turmeric. Break them into small chunks to allow them to dry faster. Once dried, put them into a grinder and grind till they become turmeric powder. To save time, you can purchase ready-made turmeric powder at any convenient stores near you.

The turmeric powder is them mixed with other ingredients to make it into a paste. You can use water, curd, rose water, milk, sandal paste and vermillion. To apply, just take a handful of paste and apply it on the person. Some people use betel leaf instead of their hands.

1) Colour

    The colour of Haldi is considered to be very favorable in the India traditional customs. It depicts prosperity and well being of life. By using this colour, it shows that the family and loved ones hope for the best for the couples.

2) Anti-septic

    Turmeric is a spice that can heal cuts and bruises. In medical terms, turmeric contains health value. Long ago before ointments came to be, people use turmeric as medicine. 

3) Alleviate evil eyes

    Known as ‘Buri Nazar’. Applying Haldi ensures that the bride and groom will not be harmed by any evil eyes before they get married. 

4) Beautification

    Turmeric gives you a fairer sin tone. It also helps remove tan and acne, leaving you with a glowing and brighter skin.

5) Stress reliever

    Haldi is a fun  occasion. Couples usually feel tensed when the wedding date is near. This ceremony helps them to feel relaxed as they will be surrounded with their loved ones and fun vibes.   

6) Purification of the body

    Turmeric is also an exfoliating agent where it helps cleanse the body. After the Haldi ceremony, the paste is rinsed off. By doing so, it gets rid of dead cells and detoxifies the skin.
