‘Behind every beautiful
thing, there’s been some kind of pain’- Bob Dylan
A well said quote. We
all know there is no beauty without pain. Every effort one takes to beautify
themselves requires a sacrifice. Sometimes it is not us that go through the
pain; it is those helpless creature who suffer for our personal gain.
Take a look at this cutie here because what I am about to share with you is
what we’ve all least expected.
Mink.Ever heard
of them? Well, they are wild animals that looks similar to a ferret or weasel, whose furs are used for making false eyelashes, eyelash extensions and brow filler. Some people don’t have
thick and long lashes or thick brows. So they opt for fake ones to make them look better.
The question is have you wondered what are these lashes made off? In Australia and also other countries, Mink
lashes have become popular. They are 100% natural, fluffy, weightless, gives a natural shines and are comfortable to
wear. Most sellers of this product would say it’s cruelty-free but guess what, it’s
not. Mink lashes are never cruelty free (https://www.peta.org.au/living/cruelty-behind-mink-lashes/).
Here’s a story from a
buyer who found out the truth about these mink lashes. This buyer had the idea
to launch her own lashes because to her, girls are so much into make ups, eye
lashes and many more. She almost paid a vendor but took a pause to question
herself ‘how are these lashes made’ and ‘are they cruelty-free’. The vendor
told her that they were made of mink lashes and she had no idea what was a
mink. So she started reading about them on Google and saw the cruelty in the
lashes industry and how top brands like Sephora and many others have been top
sellers and buyers of this product. Of course, she was completely shattered by
the discovery. The vendor she was talking kept saying they were mink lashes but
cruelty free and so she questioned the vendor ‘how can the lashes be cruelty
free when the hair comes from an actual animal?’ The vendor replied saying the
mink are not killed but they are brushed in order to collect the fur. Again,
she Google. She sad those who sell these kinds of lashes lie to their buyers
that they are cruelty-free. These minks are kept in a farm where they are
locked up for the rest of their lives. Their skin is exposed due to 24/7
excessive brushing. So imagine brushing your hair all day. Is it classified as
cruelty free? The minks are tied to chains and wooden belts with their heads pinned
down and they are aggressively brushed. What else do you expect out of their
body if it is not blood.
(A mink in a wired cage is left to die with its skin and flesh exposed)
So basically, mink
lashes comes from mink fur farms where minks are kept in cages. They are born
in small cages and are tortured throughout their lives only for their fur. Farmers would tie them up and brush them all
day long so they can easily obtain their fur to make mink lashes. We tend to be
so blind when it comes to such product. Whenever we see celebrities wearing
them or we see the logo ‘cruelty-free’ we straight make ways to purchase them
without studying them for a bit. The lashes that are marked as cruelty-free
come from farms where minks are not killed but kept alive and tortured. In
other words, it is like a slow painful death. PETA (People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals) have come up with 4 reasons as to why you should not get
mink lashes (https://www.peta.org/features/mink-eyelashes/).
1) 1) They come from
fur farms
2) 2) Minks don’t need to be brushed
Animals born in
the wild definitely don’t need humans help to groom themselves. They have their
own ways of doing it. Minks are not house pets that require attention and care.
Naturally, minks are afraid of humans. So if threatened they would put up a
fight. It is impossible for humans to pull out their furs while they struggle
so the best option would be tying them up and brushing the furs off their
bodies.
3) 3) Animals trapped on fur farms are violently killed
Obtaining fur
from animals is not an easy task. Like how we struggle when we go through pain,
that’s how animals would do. Some animals are being electrocuted, gassed or
repeatedly beaten till they loss conscious and then their skin or fur is ripped
of their body.
4) 4) European minks are endangered
Breeding and killing the minks for their fur will only kill their population and destroy their natural habitat.
I bet most of us are
unaware of this issue. If you are worried about getting fake lashes because it
is considered animal cruelty, don’t be. There are cruelty-free false lashes
available. They are not only affordable and accessible but also help with your
everyday looks. Many major beauty brands have turned against mink lashes
because of its cruelty towards animals. Recently, after a campaign by PETA and
over 280,000 emails from concerned shoppers, Sephora, the world’s leading
beauty retailer, will only purchase synthetic or faux-fur lashes (https://www.peta.org/blog/sephora-bans-mink-lashes-fur-eyelashes/).
You can make a difference too. When we fight together against animal cruelty, we are able to fight against this cruel system. The next time you purchase cosmetic products or any other animal related products, question yourself ‘is it really cruelty-free’. Don’t just trust the stickers or labels on those products. If you have doubts, you can do your own research or refer to animal rescue organizations.
