Pretty sure everyone in Malaysia and all over the world is just speechless by the incident that took place in the parliament. It was least expected and it just kept getting hotter and hotter.
As Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun took his oath of office as the new Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, there was a commotion among the opposition lawmakers. Opposition MPs did not waste any time to voice out their protests against Azhar's, causing a very noisy disorder. DAP's Ngeh Koo Ham, protested saying a 14-day notice on the replacement should be given before any changes take place. He also said it is not fair to other MP's as no other names were given because there was no vacancy.
And as if this wasn't enough, the MP of Baling cut through while MP of Batu Kawan, Kasthuri Patto was stating her points. Kasthuri was questioning the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat as to why there were no female names listed in the parliament committee and just like that Abdul Azeezcut through and literally said 'gelap, tak nampak'.
Following that incident, few opposition members kept urging that Abdul Azeez withdraw his statement and apologize. Kasthuri then pulled the 'Peraturan Mesyuarat 36' that stated it is inappropriate for the members of the Dewan Rakyat to use offensive and sexist remarks. According to her, Abdul Azeez did not only called her dark (gelap) but also asked her to use powder.
This is very becoming. Of all the important issues to discuss, the MPs ended up arguing and behaving inappropriately during the session. Such a shameful incident. Imagine the entire world looking at how our country conducts a session in the parliament. There is lack of discipline, lack of respect and lack of explanation. There was no need of such a big scene if everyone had just respected one another and withheld from using unnecessary words.
In the video that went viral, Kasthuri and few other MPs were pressuring the Speaker to make a ruling but he on the other hand, was so keen on moving on with the next issue. What harm would it do to just make that one ruling?
Azeez later apologized for his statement and said he was referring to the area that was dark. However, Kasthuri was dissatisfied and requested for a firmer action claiming that he was a repeat offender and that many women MPs have fallen victim to Azeez's offensive words.
You can watch what literally happened here.
